Almost
Holding on for the last few minutes
It was almost time to go our separate ways
After making a lot of memories together
The train is yet to come
And in that gap between goodbye and gone
We are sitting together on the bench, holding hands
Reliving the memories that we made
Every little thing coming back at once
The first time we spoke, the first time we laughed until it hurt
The nights we didn't want to hang up the phone
All of it sitting between us on this bench like a third person
Now that our paths are different, but
We are always together, our souls connected
I don't want to leave sight of her
That smile which I crave the most
The one that shows up even when she's trying not to cry
The birds are chirping, telling her not to leave me
Like even they know something is ending
The wind is blowing through her hair and irritating her
While she keeps brushing it away from her eyes
And I watch her do it like I'm trying to memorize the motion
The way her fingers move without her even thinking about it
I just want to hold onto her forever in my arms
Wrapped up, and never leave her
To stop this bench from ever becoming a memory itself
Her eyes are a little teary
Mine are too, but I'm blinking it back
Trying to stay strong for these last few minutes
As I hear the sound of the incoming train
Far off at first, then closer, then here
Telling me that my almost time
That I had with her is over for now
But our eyes are still glued to each other
Not missing the small details she holds while talking about the things she loves
The way her voice changes when she talks about something she's passionate about
The way she uses her hands like she's painting the words in the air
I want to keep all of it, store it somewhere safe inside me
Now that the train has arrived
The doors open like they're in a hurry
Like they don't know what they're interrupting
She has started to go away from my sight
Each step she takes a little further from me
And I stay rooted to this bench, watching
It's almost time to leave her
I hold her hand a little tighter before I let go
Like I'm trying to keep the shape of it in mine
She turns back once, just once
And that's the picture I'll carry until we meet again
The train pulls away and takes her with it
But it doesn't take the memories, it doesn't take today
It doesn't take the way she looked at me
Like leaving was just as hard for her too
It was almost enough time
But almost will have to do
Until the next almost comes around
And when it does, I'll be sitting on this same bench
Waiting for her to walk back into it.
